Overview | 概要

The twenty-fifth session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will convene from 20 April to 1 May 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The session will bring together Indigenous Peoples' representatives, Member States, United Nations entities, and civil society organizations to address priorities and challenges affecting Indigenous Peoples worldwide.

国連先住民族問題常設フォーラム（UNPFII）第25回セッションは、2026年4月20日〜5月1日にニューヨーク国連本部で開催される。先住民族の代表者、加盟国、国連機関、市民社会組織が一堂に会し、世界の先住民族が直面する優先課題と困難を議論する。

This theme reflects the growing urgency of addressing health disparities faced by Indigenous Peoples globally, particularly in regions affected by armed conflict, environmental degradation, and structural discrimination.

Discussions will take place with reference to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The session will also contribute to advancing commitments reaffirmed in the Doha Political Declaration adopted at the Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025, which calls for renewed action to promote social inclusion, reduce inequalities, and ensure that no one is left behind.

For Ryukyuan and Okinawan communities, this session carries particular relevance. The intersection of health, conflict, and Indigenous rights directly resonates with the lived experience of communities in Okinawa, where the presence of US military bases has been documented as contributing to environmental health risks, including PFAS contamination of water sources, and where the question of Indigenous recognition remains a subject of ongoing advocacy at the international level.

琉球・沖縄のコミュニティにとって、このセッションは特別な意義を持つ。健康・紛争・先住民族の権利の交差点は、沖縄の現実と直接共鳴する。米軍基地の存在が水源のPFAS汚染などの環境健康リスクに寄与していることが記録されており、先住民族としての承認問題は国際的な場での継続的な提唱活動の対象となっている。
